Second Chance Home was created in response to a need in the Buffalo community to develop housing for young mothers in the foster care system. Second Chance Home opened in 2006 to provide parenting youth between the ages of 14-21 with a safe, supportive home to raise their children while working towards their goals related to permanency, self-sufficiency and parenting.
Second Chance Home is comprised of eight bedrooms and a shared dining room, living room, kitchen, and bathrooms. Additionally, there is a laundry facility, a nursery, and a fully-fenced backyard with a playground provided by Fisher-Price.
One of the most important qualities of Second Chance Home is the aspect of shared community living. Every resident contributes to the care of the home by doing daily chores and preparing meals. Additionally, our youth participate in regular community meetings to talk about life at Second Chance Home and discuss issues related to sharing a home with others. These components of our program teach our youth skills related to communication, socialization, and independent living.
Second Chance Home is fully staffed with Child Care Workers, a Case Planner, and an Independent Living Coordinator. Our Child Care Workers work diligently with all of our youth in every component of their daily lives. Our residents are provided with many opportunities to build positive connections, for example, each Child Care Worker is linked one-on-one with a youth in order to develop personal goals, talk about their life experiences, and enhance their self-esteem. Our unique level of support continues with our Case Planner who provides our youth with connections to school, work, vocational training, day care services, medical services, and mental health services. Furthermore, Our Independent Living Coordinator works with each of our families on goals related to parenting, independent living, and building community. This person also facilitates our weekly groups that focus on, self-care, self-esteem, healthy interpersonal skills, problem-solving, positive parenting, and recreational activities.
