H.O.P.E. (Helping other People Excel) Center
_ The idea from the Homespace HOPE initiated from the work of
the Program Committee lead by our Board Member, Holly Maloney. They group saw that the young ladies of the
Homespace programs needed to focus more on their educational goals and the
agency as a whole needed to encourage and motivate the girls in any way
possible. The Program Comm. worked with
our friends at Rich Products to come up with some ideas, resources, and
decorations for the HOPE Center. There
are three components located in Unit #1 of the Homespace SILP program:
1. Group tutoring and learning opportunities area
2. Individualized tutoring/personal discussion area
3. Exercise Room
In the late summer 2011 Deacon Milania (Lullo) contacted Homespace wanting to give back to the agency in some way; within minutes of meeting the Deacon it was decided that she would be running our HOPE Center!!! Deacon Lullo is an experienced High School Teacher that specializes in english, writing, public speaking, and working with students on all levels of need. She has over 23 yrs experience with the Orchard Park school system and has a great deal of energy to meet our young ladies needs. Were are excited to welcome Deacon Lullo here on Wednesdays to assist our young ladies between the hours of 5:30-8:30 pm weekly. In addition Deacon Lullo has great contacts/resources for subjets including Spanish, Math, GED prep etc that she will be assisting Homespace young ladies with. This program is focused on providing the supports that each young lady needs to succeed.
In addition the agency has turned one of the bedrooms into a work out/exercise area for the young ladies to utilize. This include a treadmill, excersize bikes, safety posters, balance balls, mats, small sized weights, a tv/dvd combo for exercise videos, and we are working with a local girl scout and having a connection with Gold’s Gym for professional training classes.
Homepace is excited to provide the young ladies a place to learn, relax and focus on their educational needs as well as a place to decrease their stress level, let off some steam, and to feel better about themselves! Staff are encouraged to participate with the young ladies in order to motivate them to actively engage in utilizing the HOPE Center.
