What:SILP
is a foster care supportive independent living program for young adults, ages 17
to 21; focused primarily on young women.
Our program focuses on using the Trauma Informed Care Model to embrace
the needs of our youth and deliver services that are based on trust, safety,
choice, empowerment, and collaboration.
Where: 1030 Ellicott Street, Buffalo, NY 14209
When: Homespace opened for business in 1994, it is a fully owned and operated component of the Homespace Site
Why: Homespace SILP was created in response to an unmet need to provide housing and services for young, single parents. In 2011 interest began to arise as to providing these same comprehensive services to those young woman that were not pregnant or parenting but progressing on their IL goals in a more independent yet safe environment.
Facilities: An independent apartment/housing community which holds twelve (12) townhouses with 2-3 bedrooms each. Each unit has a private: kitchen, dining room, living room, and bathroom. Limited storage is also provided in each unit. In addition, there are shared laundry facilities, a monitored courtyard, and community room for activities. The facility has 24 hour on site staffing to ensure the care and safety of each resident. The location is close to transportation, shopping, and educational/training sites. The facility is handicap-accessible.
Programs & Services: On-site services include: case management, independent living skills, support groups, educational seminar recreational programs and a strong focus on educational opportunities. Referrals can be made to the following services: counseling, daycare, education, employment, health, housing, legal assistance and job-training.
Family Assessment and Service Plans are developed to help each family to acquire the skills necessary to prepare each family to either reunite with the family of origin or attain independence. Our youth are required to continue their education for eligibility to receive their high school diploma.
Eligibility: Young single adults, 17 to 21 years of age, who are committed to progressing in the areas of independence, educational, and vocational services. Referrals are generated by Erie County Department of Social Services and other Counties. All youth through ECDSS who are under the age of 18 will only be considered with Directors consent/approval. Residents must be willing to live and work with goal-oriented approach to independent living and permanency.
Staff: Kim Morris, Executive Director of Homespace Corporation oversees a team of professionals who provide supportive services. The team consists of a Program Director, Case Planner, Independent Living Coordinator, an Educator, Child Care Supervisor, and Child Care workers who provide 24-hour supervision.
